Oracle of Consciousness

#146 - Cognitive
Dissonance

Cognitive Dissonance:

The mental stress that people experience when exposed to information that is inconsistent with their beliefs, ideals, or values.

As human beings we have a tendency to partition what we believe to be our personal truths, away from any opposing or differing opinions.

Why do we do that?

There is a certain comfort associated with what we already ‘know,’ which is opposite to the uncomfortable feeling arising when seeing or hearing contrasting perspectives.

Up pops the EGO to demand:

“I am right, and your point of view is wrong!”

Often it is a clear avoidance and denial of reality that permits Cognitive Dissonance to prevail, which may result in feeling defensive, confused, uncertain, inner conflict and possibly disorientated.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having an opinion, in fact it is your inalienable right, however, when that opinion fails to see or address the unfolding reality which is observable right there in the open, that is when Cognitive Dissonance can kick in.

This activates the EGO’s penchant to act out its separateness and in doing so, may trigger the desire or actual need to cause harm to the owner(s) of the opposing views.

This is precisely what wars are about!

One’s personal truth, point of view, and beliefs, which may have been present for a life-time have been severely challenged and even crushed, leaving one shell-shocked and dumbfounded, often with a strong desire to oppose the source.

The opposite of Cognitive Dissonance is termed Cognitive Consonance, which is having agreement or compatibility between opinions or actions.

Ones personal values play an important role here in both cases.

Cognitive Dissonance: There may be a perspective or conflict occurring which is in direct opposition to your core values, beliefs and ideas.

Cognitive Consonance: Where there is a mutual alignment with one’s values

Be willing and practice being present and actively listening to the other persons point of view.

Become aware of the EGO’s voice countering what is being said and heard.

Bravely apply compassion, understanding and humility.

Do your own homework on the subject sorting through both sides of the equation, to form your personal truth.

Be willing and open to change your beliefs if necessary as you become more informed and aware.

Become more conscious, wiser, and more intelligent.

The love that you search for everywhere is already present within you. It may be evoked by any number of people or events. But finally, you must realize you are this love. The source of all love is within you.
